Presentation of MAGELLAN at KMM-VIN Research Group Meeting

26.02.2025

On the 26th of February 2025, MAGELLAN was presented during the KMM-VIN Research Group Meeting, where Ane Jimenez from Tecnalia introduced the project’s innovative approach to developing a sustainable and cost-effective rare earth element (REE) permanent magnet value chain for electric vehicle traction motors (EVTMs).

The presentation outlined MAGELLAN’s main objectives: advancing recycling and manufacturing processes at TRL7, optimising rotor design for improved performance and easier end-of-life dismantling, and recovering and recycling magnets with minimal REE losses while promoting standardised labelling to enable reuse.

Ane also highlighted the project’s expected impact, including prototype validation in real-world environments, up to 50% CO₂ reduction compared to current production methods, the creation of new skilled jobs, and the potential for scaling production to around 2,000 tonnes of magnets per year by 2040 – covering a significant share of the European EVTM and PM market.

The session provided an opportunity to engage with the advanced structural and functional materials research community and raise awareness of MAGELLAN’s contributions to sustainable magnet technologies.
