Presentation at EoLIS 2025 during the “Waste codes Demystified” session

24.11.2025

EoLIS – End-of-Life Issues & Strategies Seminar – is WindEurope’s annual get-together looking at the challenges and opportunities we face when it comes to our ageing wind turbines. Alexandre Damiens, Head of Development and Industrial Partnerships – Rare Earth/Magnets at Orano participated as a speaker during the session “Demystifying the rules of handling waste“, where he presented MAGELLAN’s innitiaves regarding the introduction of dedicated waste codes for permanent magnets.

Clear waste classification is a cornerstone of effective circular economy policies – especially for complex materials such end-of-life products containing permanent magnets. Ambiguity around waste codes for these materials hinders recycling, traceability, and regulatory alignment, slowing the development of circular markets and sustainable material flows.

The session explored how dedicated and clarified waste codes for composites and permanent magnets can unlock smarter recycling pathways, support regulatory compliance, and enhance material traceability. Establishing clear classification, empowers recyclers, and industry stakeholders to collaborate more effectively, enabling sustainable circularity across sectors and improving Europe’s access to critical secondary materials.
