On the 15th of September 2025, MAGELLAN was showcased at the European Powder Metallurgy Congress & Exhibition (EuroPM2025), held in Glasgow. Representing Orano, Alexandre Damiens delivered a series of talks that positioned rare earth magnet recycling and high-performance magnet manufacturing at the heart of Europe’s industrial and strategic agenda.
Under the theme “Make, Use, Recover – High Performance for Permanent Magnets”, Alexandre presented MAGELLAN’s progress in developing short-loop recycling routes for rare earth permanent magnets and demonstrated how the project’s approach strengthens Europe’s capability to produce sustainable, high-coercivity magnets for automotive and wind applications.
He also contributed to a session on “High-Performance Magnets and the Triple Paradigm: Circularity, Resilience, Decarbonisation”, where the project’s results were discussed in the broader context of Europe’s shift towards industrial resilience and clean technology leadership.
The presentations highlighted that rare earth permanent magnets, while small in scale, are critical enablers of the green and digital transitions. Alexandre emphasised that introducing recycled content into high-performance magnets remains a demanding challenge requiring strong R&D collaboration, but that MAGELLAN’s integrated approach – combining short-loop recycling and advanced powder metallurgy – offers a credible European pathway forward. He underlined that recycling should be viewed as a strategic industrial opportunity rather than a by-product of waste management, capable of strengthening Europe’s resilience, reducing import dependency, and aligning with the objectives of the EU Green Deal and the Critical Raw Materials Act.
