MAGELLAN was presented at FEMS EUROMAT 2025, the 18th European Congress and Exhibition on Advanced Materials and Processes, held in Granada, Spain, from 14 to 18 September 2025. The project was represented in the H6 “Materials circularity for sustainability” session through the contribution “Magnets in Resilient supply chains”, prepared by A. Jiménez, D. Eguizabal and M. Etxabeguren from Tecnalia.
The contribution introduced MAGELLAN’s work on strengthening Europe’s resilience in the rare earth permanent magnet value chain. It highlighted the strategic importance of rare earth elements for electric vehicle traction motors, renewable energy technologies and the wider clean energy transition, while underlining Europe’s exposure to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical risks due to its dependence on imported critical materials.

Within this context, the presentation focused on MAGELLAN’s objective to develop a sustainable and cost-effective rare earth permanent magnet value chain. The work presented included advanced recycling and manufacturing technologies, efficient material reuse through Powder Injection Moulding, optimised electric vehicle traction motor rotor design, improved end-of-life dismantling, enhanced magnet recovery and recycling, and the promotion of standardised labelling to support reuse.
By participating in EUROMAT 2025, MAGELLAN contributed to discussions on materials circularity and sustainability, connecting the project’s work on permanent magnets with broader European research priorities on circular material flows, critical raw material efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The activity also supported the dissemination of MAGELLAN’s expected contribution to lowering pollutant emissions, increasing recycled content in new magnets and strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of Europe’s magnet-related industry.
