Thank you for attending our first webinar of the Rare Earth Roundtable Series, titled “Rare Earth Permanent Magnets – State of the Union“, held on the 10th of October. We hope you found the session both insightful and inspiring, as we continue to advance the discussion on sustainable and circular value chains for the production and recycling of high-performance Permanent Magnets for Europe’s electric vehicle industry.
The session, hosted by Roland Gauß, Director Innovation and Product Development at EIT RawMaterials, brought together experts from across Europe to dive into the latest developments in rare earth permanent magnets – a crucial technology for electric vehicles, wind turbines and the green transition.
👥 Highlights from our first session:
🔹 Imants Dirba from Technische Universität Darmstadt explored methods for enhancing the magnetic properties of permanent magnets while reducing heavy rare earth usage, a vital approach to lessening dependency on imports.
🔹 Fabio Scaffidi Muta from CRF shared insights into sustainable sourcing and recycling approaches for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, aligning with Stellantis’s goals for a greener future.
🔹 Alexander Barcza, Vice President of Permanent Magnets at Vacuumschmelze, discussed the company’s pioneering efforts to develop a robust supply chain for rare earth magnets, particularly to support the electric vehicle and wind energy sectors.
🔹 Benoit Richebé from Orano presented on innovative recycling methods to achieve high-performance magnets with a target of 25% recycled content for EV and wind turbine applications.
🔹 Milan Grohol from the DG GROW of the European Commission provided an update on the Critical Raw Materials Act, EU’s regulatory framework designed to secure sustainable access to critical materials and support the recycling of rare earth magnets in Europe.
