Join us for the Rare Earth Roundtable, hosted by the EIT RawMaterials Strategic Impact Group Network (SIGN) under the MAGELLAN Project, focusing on “Rare Earth and Magnet Technologies: From Pilot to Industrial Scale”.
As Europe accelerates efforts to build domestic capabilities in rare earth metallurgy, permanent magnet manufacturing and recycling, the availability of the right technologies, equipment and industrial know-how is becoming increasingly critical. While significant attention has been given to raw material supply, financing and market development, less focus has been placed on the technologies and production equipment needed to move from pilot-scale demonstration to competitive industrial production.
This Roundtable will explore whether technology and equipment constitute strategic bottlenecks for Europe’s emerging rare earth value chain, where the key capability gaps remain, and what is needed to establish competitive, scalable and resilient industrial capacity in Europe.
Key Focus:
- Identify the technologies and equipment where Europe already has strong competitive industrial capabilities
- Explore remaining dependencies on non-European technologies, equipment, process know-how and commissioning expertise
- Discuss critical areas including rare earth metallurgy, strip casting, advanced powder processing, magnetic alignment, grain boundary diffusion and recycling
- Share lessons learned from recent rare earth metallurgy, magnet manufacturing and recycling projects
- Assess technology readiness and expected demand for industrial production lines towards 2030
- Discuss the business case for developing technology and equipment capabilities in Europe
- Identify priority actions, partnerships and policy measures needed to strengthen Europe’s technological capabilities and resilient rare earth value chains
